Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is dermatology?

Dermatology is the branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing conditions related to the skin, hair, and nails. It includes both medical and cosmetic treatments for conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, skin cancer, and more.

  • Do I need a referral to see a dermatologist?

In most cases, you do not need a referral to see a dermatologist. However, some insurance plans may require one. We recommend checking with your insurance provider before scheduling an appointment to ensure you meet any requirements.

  • What should I expect during my first visit?

During your first visit, our dermatology team will conduct a thorough evaluation of your skin, review your medical history, and discuss any symptoms or concerns. You may undergo a physical exam, and if necessary, additional tests or biopsies will be performed. We will explain your treatment options and develop a personalized plan for your care.

  • What skin conditions do dermatologists treat?

Dermatologists treat a wide range of skin conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, warts, skin infections, and more. They also specialize in detecting and treating skin cancer and other serious skin conditions, as well as offering cosmetic procedures like Botox, chemical peels, and laser treatments.

  • What is the difference between a dermatologist and a dermatology PA (Physician Assistant)?

A dermatology PA is a licensed medical professional trained to diagnose and treat skin conditions under the supervision of a dermatologist. While dermatologists have completed medical school and residency, PAs have advanced training and can perform similar duties, including examinations, procedures, and patient education.

  • Are cosmetic dermatology treatments covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans do not cover cosmetic procedures such as Botox, chemical peels, or laser skin treatments, as they are considered elective treatments. However, certain medical treatments for skin conditions like acne or psoriasis may be covered. We recommend checking with your insurance provider for specific coverage details.

  • How can I prevent skin cancer?

Preventing skin cancer involves protecting your skin from excessive sun exposure, using sunscreen regularly (SPF 30 or higher), wearing protective clothing, and avoiding tanning beds. Regular skin checks and visiting a dermatologist for professional screenings are also essential in detecting skin cancer early.

  • What are common signs of skin cancer?

Common signs of skin cancer include changes in the size, shape, or color of moles or spots, new growths or sores that don’t heal, or any unusual changes in the skin. It’s important to schedule a skin check if you notice any of these symptoms.

  • How often should I visit a dermatologist for skin checks?

It’s recommended to have a full-body skin check at least once a year, especially if you have a history of skin cancer or risk factors like fair skin, a family history of skin cancer, or a history of excessive sun exposure. If you notice any changes in your skin, you should schedule an appointment sooner.

  • What can I do to improve my skin health?

To maintain healthy skin, practice good skincare habits, such as using sunscreen daily, moisturizing regularly, avoiding smoking, staying hydrated, and eating a balanced diet. If you have specific skin concerns, a dermatologist can recommend personalized skincare products or treatments.

  • What is a biopsy, and why might I need one?

A biopsy is a procedure where a small sample of skin is removed and examined under a microscope to check for abnormal or cancerous cells. Your dermatologist may recommend a biopsy if they suspect a growth, or mole could be cancerous or if they want to confirm a diagnosis.

  • What should I do if I have a skin emergency or need urgent care?
